Decide Vol. 020 – The AI Model: Change what you focus on

D

Before you get carried away by the AI in the title of this newsletter, this AI model stands for Appreciative Inquiry rather than Artificial Intelligence and was developed by David Cooperrider.

The AI (Appreciative Inquiry) Model is built on the principle that what we focus on expands.

It encourages us to move away from problem-centric thinking and directs our attention towards our strengths, positive attributes and potential rather than our weaknesses.

By embracing this approach, we can unlock new possibilities cultivate a more positive outlook and make better decisions.

“Appreciative inquiry turns the problem-solving habits of the field on their head, and shows that change is more powerful, energizing, and effective when we inquire into the true, the good, the better and the possible—everything that gives life to a system when is most alive and at its exceptional best.”

David Cooperrider

The Positive Core

The positive core of an individual’s being is one of the greatest, yet often overlooked, reservoirs of personal growth and transformation.

Studies have revealed that individuals thrive and prosper when they consistently focus on the positive aspects of themselves and their environment.

By consciously embracing their strengths and aligning their aspirations with a positive mindset, individuals can construct a future that capitalises on their core virtues.

This approach unleashes untapped potential and sparks a newfound sense of possibility, empowering individuals to embark on personal journeys they never thought possible.

A by-product of this would be better decisions.

Be positive and don’t give up.

Affirmative Topic

Before we jump into the AI-4-D-Cycle of The AI Model we need an affirmative topic.

An affirmative topic is a key part of the process and it is found by exploring ‘life-giving’ stories – those moments and experiences that truly invigorate you. These topics, at the early stages, are daring ideas about what brings you to life.

Most importantly, they represent the areas you genuinely want to discover and learn more about, sparking conversations about the future you desire.

Questions to ask yourself:

  1. What have I done well in the past and am currently excelling at?
  2. What possibilities lie within me, waiting to be unleashed for a more fulfilled and successful future?

By focusing on these affirmative topics, you empower yourself to select the areas you want to nurture and see thrive.

These choices set the stage for implementing AI in your personal growth journey.

1. Discovery: Uncovering the Best of What Is

The first step in changing what you focus on is discovering the best of what already exists within you and your surroundings.

Think about the times when you felt most energised, accomplished, and fulfilled.

What were the strengths, skills, and qualities that contributed to those moments?

Reflect on these positive experiences and use them as a foundation to build upon.

“What you focus on grows, what you think about expands, and what you dwell upon determines your destiny.”

Robin Sharma

2. Dream: Envisioning a Positive Future

Once you’ve discovered your strengths, it’s time to dream and envision a future where your potential is maximised.

Allow your imagination to soar and paint a vivid picture of the possibilities that lie ahead.

What would it look like if you utilized your strengths to the fullest?

How would it feel to achieve your goals and make a positive impact?

“Dreams are the seeds of change. Nothing ever grows without a seed, and nothing ever changes without a dream.”

Debby Boone

3. Design: Co-Creating a Path Forward

With a clear vision in mind, it’s time to design a roadmap towards your desired future.

Engage in collaborative conversations with others who share your goals and aspirations.

Identify the steps, resources, and support systems needed to turn your dreams into reality.

This phase is about actively shaping the path ahead and building on the positive momentum generated through discovery and dreaming.

“The best way to predict the future is to create it.”

Peter Drucker

4. Destiny: Embracing Positive Change

The final stage of The AI Model is embracing the positive change that comes from focusing on your strengths, positive attributes, and potential.

It’s about taking action, implementing the designed strategies, and consistently reinforcing a positive mindset.

Celebrate small wins along the way, as they serve as markers of progress and fuel for further growth.

“The only limit to your impact is your imagination and commitment.”

Tony Robbins

In conclusion, changing what you focus on can have a profound impact on your life.

The AI Model offers a powerful framework for concentrating on your strengths, positive attributes, and potential.

By discovering the best of what is, dreaming of a positive future, designing a path forward, and embracing positive change, you can cultivate a more positive mindset and unlock new possibilities.

So, here’s your challenge: I challenge you to shift your perspective and choose to concentrate on your strengths rather than your weaknesses.

Embrace The AI Model and let it guide you towards a brighter future.

Remember, what you focus on expands, and by focusing on your strengths and positive attributes, you have the power to create a life filled with limitless possibilities.

I am fascinated by decisions and the art of decision-making. In the past, I’ve made loads of poor decisions that I’ve come to regret and I’ve also made some good decisions too. I’ve come to realise that life is short (Memento Mori) and the better my decisions are the better my life will be.
